Tattooing eyeliner isn’t just technical—it’s emotional, artistic, and deeply personal for the client. Whether you’re just starting out or perfecting your signature wing, here are a few top tips straight from Inspired by Ms Amber Red podcast episodes that artists swear by:

1. Map Like a Artist, Think Like a Technician

Before needle ever meets skin, how you map the liner determines everything. Visualize the final healed look—not the inked line in front of you. Keep your client’s eye shape, creases, lid movement, and facial expression in mind.

2. Control Comes from Comfort

You can’t create clean, crisp lines if you’re tense—or if your client is. Focus on body positioning, anchoring your hands, and using a machine that doesn’t fight your flow. Calm energy + tight stretch = confident linework.

3. Less Trauma, Larger Needles

One of Ms. Amber Red’s golden rules: “Down one row back up the same exact row, moving slightly forward - overlap by half” Following a specific pattern allows even pigment implantation. This minimizes swelling and irritation, and poor retention.

4. Wipe Smarter, Not Harder

Sounds simple, but it’s crucial—be gentle with wipes. Excessive rubbing can irritate the thin lid skin and cause extra swelling. Wipe only when necessary, and clean throughout the lash line with a damp Q-tip through out as pigment builds up in the lashes. 

5. Show Up With Strategy

Have a plan for the eye shape before starting, yup that’s right: what are you tattooing lash-line or a wing before you start. The difference between “basic” and “striking” is often in the tiny decisions you make with intention. But having a gamelan with solid mapping before you start is important! Identify blow out zones, first and last lash, skin stability, lid space, and the eyelids creases before starting!
